Coats are sized to be worn over other clothes, so the numbers on this page are not the same as the numbers on a dress or a shirt. Everything below is a flat garment measurement — the coat laid out, not your body — with guidance on how much room to leave for what you actually wear underneath.
How to read our measurements
Every measurement on this page and on each product page is a flat garment measurement. We lay the coat out on a table, smooth it without stretching, fasten it, and measure across. Chest is measured across the coat from underarm seam to underarm seam and then doubled, so a coat listed at 108cm chest measures 54cm across when flat. This matters because outerwear is deliberately larger than your body measurement — the difference between the two is the room you have for a jumper.
Body size to coat size
Our size run is UK 6 to UK 18 depending on style. As a starting point, these are the body measurements each size is drafted for:

Ease: how much room a coat needs
Ease is the gap between your bust measurement and the coat’s flat chest measurement. We draft to these figures, and they are worth checking against the product page before you order:
- Wool long coats — 16 to 20cm of ease. Enough for a fine-gauge jumper and a shirt. A UK 10 wool coat measures roughly 104-108cm on the chest.
- Short wool jackets — 12 to 16cm on fitted shapes, up to 22cm on boxy overshirts. A UK 10 boxy overshirt can measure 110cm and is meant to.
- Trench coats — 18 to 22cm, because a trench is worn over tailoring as often as over knitwear. A UK 10 belted trench sits near 108cm.
- Suede jackets — 8 to 12cm. Suede has almost no recovery, so these are cut closer and should not be sized down.
- Down coats — 14 to 18cm on the shell, but the fill itself takes up space inside, so the wearable room is less than the number suggests.
- Capes — chest is not a useful measure. Judge these by shoulder width and total length instead.

How to measure yourself
- Bust — around the fullest part, tape level and snug, wearing the bra you would normally wear.
- Waist — at the narrowest point, usually just above the navel.
- Hip — around the fullest part, roughly 20cm below the waist.
- Shoulder — from the bony point of one shoulder across the back to the other.
- Sleeve — from the shoulder point, over a slightly bent elbow, to the wrist bone.
- Preferred length — measure a coat you already own from the base of the collar at the centre back down to the hem, then compare to our back length figure.
Raglan and dropped shoulders
Trenches are cut with raglan sleeves, so there is no shoulder seam to measure. We publish a neck-to-cuff figure instead. Boxy overshirts and unlined trenches use a dropped shoulder, which means the shoulder measurement is intentionally wider than your body — do not read that as the coat being too big.
Height and length
Our fit model is 178cm and wears a UK 10. On a 178cm frame a mid-calf coat listed at 115cm back length falls just below the calf. If you are around 160cm, the same coat will read as ankle length; if you are 185cm it will sit closer to the knee. Length is worth checking more carefully than chest, because it is the measurement most people misjudge.
Between two sizes
Take the larger size if you wear chunky knitwear underneath, if your shoulder measurement is at the top of the range, or if the style is suede. Take the smaller size if you want a wool coat to close cleanly over a shirt only, or if the style is already cut boxy.
